How to Remove Mold from Towels
1. Pre-Treat
- Take the towel outside and shake or brush off loose spores.
- Soak in hot water with 1–2 cups white vinegar for 1 hour.
2. Wash
- Machine wash on the hottest setting the towel allows.
- Add either:
- 1 cup white vinegar in the rinse cycle, or
- ½ cup baking soda with detergent.
(Do not mix vinegar and baking soda in the same cycle.)
3. Dry
- Hang in full sun until completely dry. Sunlight kills mold spores and removes odour.
4. Treat Stubborn Stains
- Make a paste of baking soda + water, apply to spots, wait 15–30 mins, then rewash.
- Oxygen bleach (e.g., Napisan) can also lift stains safely.
5. Prevent Future Mold
- Never leave wet towels bunched up.
- Spread towels out to dry after use.
- Wash towels hot occasionally, especially in humid NZ weather.
